CHAPTER NINE

Najeem took me to the car garage, but instead of getting in one of the available vehicles, we walked to the end of the garage and entered a door I hadn’t seen before. The metal was the gray of the mountain and blended in very well.

The door led to a dark tunnel. Pocket lights lit a path on both sides. I didn’t bother asking who built the tunnel. I knew Najeem had done it, probably using his magic to do so.

His self-discipline amazed me. He could change reality. A gift like that, in the wrong hands, could upset the world, but Najeem controlled himself well and had created limits for his magic.

I asked him. “How’s Jalaal?” Jalaal was Najeem’s son. We were around the same age, which was something that had disturbed Najeem when he realized how attracted he was to me.

“He hates me.”

My heart skipped a beat. “Why? Because we’re together?” Jalaal had wanted me as well, but his intentions had been more about glory. He’d wanted to take part in the prophecy.

“No. Don’t forget. He still blames me for his mother’s death.” Najeem’s wife died in the explosion that had created him.

It hadn’t been his fault, but I could sense some guilt within him.

Our steps filled the silence for a while.

The closer we got to the belly of the mountain, the warmer the air got.

I couldn’t let the subject go. “Do you think he’ll come around?”

“I don’t know. Wolves are known for their distrust.” His wife had been a wolf. Jalaal had gotten the gene from her.

I could concur with his statement. Asher hadn’t trusted Dominic until today, and that was only after Dominic almost died in an attempt to save Fenn and his brothers.

“I’m upset with my mother, but I still want her around. When the dust settles, you should visit him.” Jalaal attended one of our rival schools on the other side of the country.

He looked at me. “You think he’d listen to me?”

“Maybe not, but in the end, he could never say that you didn’t love him.”

He smiled and grabbed my hand. “You’re right. I’ll go see him.”

We made it to the heart of the mountain a moment later. The tunnel ended at the door that led into the enclosed booth at the top of the cavern that I remembered visiting during a competition that had taken place months ago.

Witches and shifters from all over had come to compete to be one of the men who would fulfill the prophecy. I walked past the bar and lounge with the widescreen TV and down the short steps that were lined with chairs.

At the glass that overlooked the cavern’s heart, I remembered the battle that had taken place. Dominic had come and annihilated the competition. And when the danger had reared its ugly head, the seven of us—me, Najeem, Asher, Fenn, Gar, Lukka, and Dominic—had banded together and sealed our fate.

Now Dominic was down there again, but instead of fighting for his life, he would be ending it.
